AN INTEGRATED ULTRASONIC SENSOR BASED SMART CANE FOR ASSISTING THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Abstract


Smart cane is an innovative stick developed for visually challenged people for improved guidance in navigation. We are proposing an advanced blind stick that allows visually challenged people to navigate with ease by using advanced technology. This Blind Stick is combined with ultrasonic sensor along with water sensing. This project essentially uses ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles in front using ultrasonic waves. On sensing obstacles, the sensor forwards the relevant data to the microcontroller. The microcontroller processes the received data and calculates the distance of the obstacle from the stick. If the obstacle is not near the circuit does not consider it. If the obstacle is near enough the microcontroller sends a signal to sound the buzzer. As an Additional feature, it detects and alerts through a different buzzer when close to water and it allows the blind to detect if there is light or darkness in the room. The system provides a unique feature for helping the blind find their stick if they forget where they kept it. A wireless RF-based remote is used for this purpose. On pressing the remote button, a buzzer sounds on the stick which helps the blind person to find their stick. Thus, this system eventually allows detecting obstacle as well as finding the stick if misplaced by visually impaired people.
